Comfy Barrel Pelham
The comfy barrel is ergonomically shaped to follow the confirmation of the horses mouth, and at only 10mm thick it leaves room in the mouth for horses that don’t naturally have that much room for the bit.
The barrel centre keeps the bits constant shape whilst forming a joint to give some movement in the mouthpiece, the barrel gives the bit independent movement of either side to give a more definite signal to the horse, as there is no twist to the rest of the bit as there is with other double jointed bits. With the barrel being stiller than a conventional lozenge or french link it doesn’t irritate the palate and as it restricts the amount of movement In the bit it also restricts the bit from putting pressure on the palate
The pelham is simply a hanging cheek with a shank to apply other pressures, ideally ridden with 2 reins, the first rein being connected to the snaffle ring gives the same signals and feel to riding in a hanging cheek, the second rein attached to the bottom small ring gives action to the bit and starts to introduce curb and poll pressure simultaneously and also applying more pressure to the tongue as the mouthpiece rotates, it can also be ridden with one rein by using a rounding but this dulls the action of the shank gives us and also stops the pelham being ridden as a snaffle off the snaffle ring as we will always apply pressure to the bottom ring, with how the pelham attaches to the cheekpieces of the bridle it suspends the bit in the mouth taking the weight of the bit off the tongue, again like the fit of a hanging cheek.
